America runs on people like us

Christie's picture
Posted July 9th, 2008 by Christie
Location: Nashville, TN

Today, we’re in Nashville, TN working with Senator Lamar Alexander’s re-election campaign.  Senator Alexander’s Democratic opponents still have a primary to get through so while they’re busy fighting with each other, this campaign is focused on fundraising.  After spending the morning entering information into a donor database, it looks like we will be hitting the streets to put up signs for the rest of the day.

As usual, all of the staffers here have been wonderful.  Something I’m starting to really appreciate about all of the campaigns we’ve visited is how much they rely on enthusiastic and driven young people to get things done.  It seems like college students have a bad rap among older generations for being politically apathetic but anyone who thinks that should see how much of what politicians do is made possible by people our age.

I think I most started to notice this when we stopped in Columbia and worked with Congressman Wilson’s staff.  Aside from the fact that his campaign manager is only two years out of college and that no one in the office is over the age of 25, I was really impressed when we showed up to the parade at 8 am on the 4th of July to see dozens of college-aged volunteers who were bright eyed, bushy tailed, and glad to be helping the Congressman for the day.  Of all the things those volunteers could have done on that holiday (sleeping, going to the lake, attending a party, etc.), they chose to spend their time helping others learn about a candidate they believe in.

Senator Alexander’s office is the same way.  The majority of the people working here are either in college or have recently graduated.  In the back of my head somewhere I think I’ve always known that campaigns have been successful because of young people’s hard work, but seeing it firsthand has truly refreshed my sense of optimism about our generation and our future.  Politicians couldn’t even run for office without the long hours young people put in and I really hope that young people will also use their votes to help Republicans win in November.

"Right" on!

One way to tell that you are doing a great job is when you strike a nerve! Choosing the "right" way is never the easy way but it is definitely the way to be refined by fire!

We enjoyed watching you on TV. You have certainly grown up to be a lovely young lady. (Your parents raised you the "right" way!)

Keep up the good work. You inspire us oldies!

Nashville is Blue, too

On July 11th, 2008 Joementum (not verified) says:

Uhm ... to get from Atlanta to Nashville without setting foot inside a Democratic district, you had to go up the eastern edge of TN, hop across the TN-KY border in Claiborne County, drive west in southern KY, and then drop down into the Nashville area around Clarksville and wind your way through Marsha Blackburn's gerrymandered district, swimming across the Cumberland at one point where the 7th isn't contiguously accessible by road.

Otherwise, you just spent some considerable time in the districts of Lincoln Davis (D), Bart Gordon (D).

Nashville is (except for a Brentwood-area precinct or two) in Jim Cooper's district, by the way.

It's called cheap labor. Also, people with real jobs can't take off a few months here or there to work as paid campaign staffers.

But you're right, there is a sense of optimism among young people, thanks having the choice to vote for Barack Obama in November.

Atlanta is Blue

How did y'all get to Nashville without going through Atlanta? There are two Democratic districts in Atlanta. Also, how'd you get through Savannah without going through the Democratic district there?

There are roads that aren't highways...

On July 10th, 2008 Jeremy says:

Atlanta was the nearest Fox studio to shoot our segment Monday so we stopped by for that and for the Braves game on our off day. We didn't do any volunteer work there... We then returned to our path in Athens Tuesday. As for getting to Chattanooga from Athens, district 10 (R-Paul Broun) connects to District 9 (R - Nathan Deal)

As for Savannah... we stayed in the first district. We came north from Jacksonville, the 4th Congressional District (R-Ander Crenshaw) and hit the suburbs of Savannah that are part of district 1. Congressman Jack Kingston lives in Savannah suburbs, part of his district... its a pretty clear red shot.

Savannah to Athens

On July 11th, 2008 Joementum (not verified) says:

To get from GA-01 near Savannah to Athens (Paul Broun's district, IIRC), you had to get briefly into John Barrow's district to cross into South Carolina from Savannah.

I'm assuming you guys didn't swim across the Savannah River, right? :)
