Thursday, we hit Topeka, KS, part of the second Congressional district. The Kansas 2nd was one of the most surprising 2006 Republican losses. Congressman Jim Ryun, who had been serving the district for 10 years, was narrowly defeated by Democrat Nancy Boyda. The district is one of the Republican’s top targets to flip back to Red. We entered the district at a strange time, two days after their primary election. Jim Ryun was defeated by current Kansas Treasurer Lynn Jenkins and she will now move forward as the nominee to take this seat back from Boyda.
Since the election was only won by a little over 1000 votes, things were a little hectic at the Jenkins camp. We were actually in town the same day as their “unity press conference.” Former Congressman and opponent Jim Ryun endorsed Treasurer Jenkins and the party is moving forward to unseat Boyda. To further complicate things, there was a wreck in Topeka that took out telephones in the area so the campaign office was without phones or internet.
Despite the setbacks there was plenty for us to do. We went out and retrieved yard signs from the primary. In Topeka, you must remove all political signs within two or three days of the primary. We retrieved the signs and recorded their locations so the campaign could get them back out for the general election.
While driving around, we heard a few Nancy Boyda (KS-D) ads. Looks like she's hopping on the same wagon as many other at risk dems: supporting drilling. It's even been rumored that Speaker Pelosi has encouraged Dems at risk to back drilling (b/c its popular) in order to win re-election. No risk in breaking away from leadership on an issue that will never come up to vote. Hopefully Kansas voters will see beyond the “usual politics” from the Democratic majority.
whee!
Just donated to Boyda. Thanks!
Good Luck.
So I stumbled across this website through my gmail account. The link asked me, "Don't like Nancy Boyda?" And I thought that, since I'm working full time to elect Nancy Boyda and other Kansas Democrats, I'd check it out.
Just wanted to wish all the young Republicans out there good luck. While we are competitors, we almost certainly agree on more than we might think. I'm proud of my candidates just like you are of yours.
I just graduated from Valparaiso University in May and I honestly don't understand why every Poli Sci geek wouldn't immediately go to work for their candidate or party. Especially this year.
So, in conclusion, best of luck to us all, and may the best party win.

PS - Great blog, Jeremy.
Good Luck to you too
Thanks for the comment. I certainly agree that we have more in common than people might think. I think one thing I have realized traveling across the country is that the United States truly is a right to center country, and there is a lot there at the center that we are on the same page with, we just need people out there willing to compromise. I think in Kansas, a pretty conservative state that is especially true. I hope that no matter whom wins in any of the districts we work in, politicians come together and solve some of our nation’s problems.
Congrats on being a fellow recent graduate! I'm with you, if you are a poly sci person, I don't know how you wouldn't be out in an election like this!
Best of luck in all your endeavors
PS. For the record, I am not a big fan of this "Don't like ____?" I actually like plenty of Democrats, one of my roommates is a Democrat and I probably had more liberal friends than conservative friends at Miami. We just disagree politically and thats perfectly fine. Having the ability to disagree and have a real discussion about the direction of the country part of the beauty of our system. Keep up the hard work and fight for what you believe in!
