come together right now over energy

Kerry's picture

Now is definitely the time to figure out and implement a sustainable energy program.  Congressman Dan Burton took the afternoon to hold an energy hearing to address this issue.  He is currently working with a group of congressman from both parties to work on a bill that will address our currently energy problem.

Congressman Burton said that this new bill could help within the next few years to move towards energy independence.   They are trying to get the bill through by September 31st before Congress finishes session.

The first panel included Michael Brairton, from the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs of the U.S. Department of Energy, Dr. William Ellingson a former Principal Scientist of the Argonne National Laboratory, and Maggie McShane from American Petroleum Institute.  They all gave great points about using clean, efficient, and sustainable energy programs.

Maggie McShane made a great point about people who are against drilling in ANWR for the sole fact that there is only a limited supply of oil there.  “That’s like telling a farmer he shouldn’t plant his 40 acre farm because he can’t meet the demand of the entire country.”  She made the point that any and all domestic oil or other energy solutions will help.  The panel also stressed that we need to use all energy sources available to us, which includes oil but also wind-energy, solar-energy, and natural gasses.

The second panel was made up of media personnel including Abdul Hakim-Shabazz host of “Abdul in the Mornings,” Jim Shella host of “Indiana Week in Review,” and Joshua Gillespie blogger and founder of “Hoosier Access.”  After they all spoke, Congressman Burton asked them to tell him what they had been hearing from people they had spoken to through their radio shows and blogs.  The Congressman was really interested in hearing what people thought about gas prices and on current energy issues.

People had been telling Hakin-Shabazz, Shella, and Gillespie that they didn’t think the government was doing enough on the energy issue.  Maggie McShane brought up an interesting point to this that the consumer has an extremely important role in the energy situation as well.  In fact Americans have been responding to this issue. Brairton said that our demand has actually decreased over the past few years while developing nations like China and India have seen a demand increase of 1.3 billion!

Congressman Burton also stressed the idea of bipartisan cooperation on the bill.  Congressman Abercrombie (D) from Hawaii is working on the bill and has said he will go to Nancy Pelosi and push cooperation from Democrats on the bill.  He mentioned that it was difficult to gain support from the Democrats because of Pelosi’s opposition to the bill.  He said that the Democrats could be afraid to anger their party leader and perhaps lose their positions on committees if they supported it.

I would sincerely hope that they would rather do what is right for their country than keep a chairmanship on a committee.  If not, I think they are in the wrong line of work and that as Americans we have the responsibility to put people into office that will work for the good of our country not their personal political ambitions.

What a shame so many believe in magic bullets

Look at the FACTS.

There has not been ONE single new well, not one more drop of domestic crude has hit the pipeline since the price of gas hit $4.60 or so in California. I saw a price of $3.85 today.

So, gas has dropped $.75 per gallon without the Repubs vaunted Drill now, drill here, drill drill drill.

Why? BECAUSE THERE IS NO SHORTAGE.

There will be a shortage. We SHOULD allow oil companies to drill in previously forbidden areas but it will have little long term effect on the price of fuel and once the crude is pumped out of the ground it is no longer OURS as a nation but the company's that drilled it, they have no obligation to keep it "domestic" in fact they, this very day EXPORT domestic crude. Not very patriot of them, is it?

On this issue, Republicans are being lied to and they are buying the lie.

Drilling now encourages consumption now and further delay in finding alternatives - We saw it in the 70's and we will see it again.

ANYONE who believes that we can become energy independent by drilling, or by coal conversion or by oil shale extraction is either a fool or a tool.

Coal conversion into portable energy for vehicles is as much of an illusion as ethanol from corn.

Shale? it costs almost as much energy to extract the oil as the oil yields.
Oil? don't be fooled by figures such as trillions of brls off the coast or hundreds of billions in ANWAR.

The Prudohe fields, when they reached top capacity supplied 1.3 million brls a day - for about 9 years.

We import 10 million brls per day.

The Ghwar field in SA produces about 5 million brls a day (the column is about 130 miles long by 30 miles wide by 200 feet deep by my recolection). No comparable field, even considering the advances of engineering, has been found in almost SEVENTY years.

The next largest field is also in SA, and it is 4 times smaller. It will take TWO GHWAR finds to end our dependence. It is possible, it is possible to hit the million dollar lottery twice in the same decade but Repubs are claiming that this is a virtual certainty.

It is not how much oil is in the ground, it is not EVEN how much oil can eventually be recovered - it is how much can be pumped without damaging the field. Anything else is bunk.

Republicans are Lying to you about this.

Suddenly Energy is an issue??

Even then I thought that was amazingly short sighted.

I think it's always been an issue but until now we haven't had the pressures that force the American people to address it. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes time and stress to make people act on something.

Today's example of Republicans staying in DC to work on energy policy, despite the Democratic led decision to adjourn until the beginning of September, shows that politicians are finally taking this seriously.

People acting on something

On August 6th, 2008 MrPitchfork (not verified) says:

People are so used to the talking heads on TV telling them what to do and how to think that they have become lazy. Not to mention that people are also distracted by entertainment like XBox, Playstation, etc.. I didn't have things like this when I was a kid. No cell phones, no PC's. You had to think back then and make informative decisions. Now the presidential race is nothing more than a dog and pony show. The things I've found out about on whats going through Congress would make everyone scream. There's a push to socialize America I think. We have to fight back with all our might on this and protect the Constitution and everything it stands for. The real power here is in WE THE PEOPLE. We're the boss.
