Location: Columbia, SC

This evening, we had our first encounter with an angry democrat.

We arrived in Columbia, SC yesterday afternoon and we had an evening appointment to help the Wilson for Congress campaign set up for today’s 4th of July Parade.  We met up with Campaign Manager Preston Grisham, a 05 University of South Carolina grad.  We got a bit to eat with Preston and then headed to Gilbert, SC home of the annual 4th of July Peach festival and parade.

The parade spans only about a half mile, which would make you think this parade isn’t a big deal.  That is certainly not the case.  Supposedly there is only something like 15,000 people in Gilbert, SC but over 30,000 come for the parade.  Two years ago Governor Mark Sanford made an appearance at the parade alongside Congressman Wilson.  It is a must for political campaigns.

As we got ready to leave Gilbert after stapling Wilson for Congress signs on every telephone pole, we realized we missed a pole.   We posted signs in the location but then we noticed that we missed more than one pole… not possible.  As we drove up and down the street, we found an older bearded man with a pile of Wilson for Congress signs folded up in hand.  After confronting the man, he claimed that it was illegal to post signs on telephone poles.  He didn’t give us much trouble and we went along our way reposting the signs.  We then continued on to post some yard signs along the paths to the parade area.  As we prepared the leave Gilbert, we found that again, multiple signs were missing.

This was just getting annoying.  We ended up catching the guy again and he asserted that it was illegal.  Little did he know, the City was posting up 50 year anniversary peach festival signs on the poles as well.  That didn’t bode well for his argument.  We followed the man around again until the left town, and then reposted the signs.  We will see if he struck again when we return to Gilbert in about an hour.  To be continued.
