This afternoon we were lucky enough to meet our 2nd Congressman of the trip when Congressman Jack Kingston invited us into his home here in Savannah.
We arrived at the campaign office this morning, I can’t say I expected to even meet the congressman let alone have him welcome us into his home. In fact, we weren’t sure we would be doing more than just stopping by, but we were pleasantly surprised. When we arrived one of the congressman's staff was struggling to fix the congressman's iPod for him, so I set out to figure out the issue. While I moved some songs around, she called the Congressman and before we knew it, we were winding through the streets of Savannah to his home.
The Congressman has been having back problems and he had it checked out this morning. He was told to take it easy for a couple days before his intense 4th of July schedule but he was still kind enough to entertain the WITR crew at his home. Congressman Kingston could not have been a better host. He and his son offered us drinks, sandwiches, and he was extremely interested in hearing about the trip. We gave him a rundown of the past week, and our future plans. We talked politics, our career goals, and college life. His son Jim will be a senior in HS this year, and the Congressman wanted to us to give him some advice to help him on his search. Of course I told him he need not look further than Miami University.
The Congressman is blessed to serve a primarily conservative district but he isn't taking anything for granted. He will be taking part in 3 or 4 parades on the 4th and a couple of other barbecues and festivals. On Sunday he will be serving food to veterans in the district. The Georgia 1st span over a large area so he is going to be on the move all weekend. I have to respect his diligence on one of his few holiday of the year.
David, you were definitely right... Kingston is an A-lister for sure. After spending time with the Congressman today, it's easy to see why he so well respected in Congress.
