Rockstar: Steve Stivers

Yesterday we spent our fourth and final day in the Stivers for Congress office working to ensure that the Ohio 15th Congressional stays in the hands of Republicans. At the end of the day we had the opportunity to sit down with the State Senator and speak candidly about the 08 election and what he hopes to do as a United States Congressman. After our talk, I believe Congressman Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) is right; Steve Stivers is a rock star.

Early in the day, we spent time organizing Tuesday evening's door-to-door efforts in Worthington. We mapped out routes that are most convenient for the volunteers to walk, printed out directions, and organized the literature for each precinct; not glamorous work but necessary for a grassroots effort to be effective.

I really respect the campaign’s emphasis on door-to-door efforts. Political Director Adam Kuhn told me he hasn’t had a day off since February. Every Saturday and Sunday (and some weekday evenings) the campaign is out knocking on doors to get word out about the Senator. Even more impressive is that Senator Stivers is out there working hard alongside volunteers and supporters almost everytime. He really is working hard to earn the votes of his future constituents, and that is the way politics should work.

Before we left the office, we got to sit down with Senator Stivers and talk candidly about the youth vote and the 08 election. I now understand why Congressman Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) refers to Stivers as a rock star. It was refreshing to hear a candidate talk about reaching across the aisle, keeping taxes low, keeping America safe and personal liberty; all things that I believe should be important to college aged kids like ourselves.

I was especially pleased to hear Stivers speaking about his past bipartisan efforts in the Ohio Senate and how he understood the importance of bipartisanship in not only to fixing the country’s problems but to restore young people’s faith in government.

I strongly believe that part of the reason young people tend to be apathetic about politics is because they don’t think our legislators are working together to fix our country’s problems. Congress has a record low approval rating partly due to this perception. Democrats AND Republicans aren’t working together and the public is sick of it. I appreciate Senator Stivers commitment to compromise once elected.
