Today we are in Texas’s 22^nd Congressional district to help Pete Olson, quite possibly Republicans' best opportunity to take a Democrat seat and turn it red. We had the opportunity to meet Pete Olson last night at a “meet and greet” in Clear Lake, a suburb of Houston. After seeing him speak, it’s easy to see why Republicans are excited about the prospect of him become this district's Representative.

The Texas 22^nd Congressional district was formerly held by former Republican Majority Leader Tom Delay. In 2006, DeLay resigned from his seat and withdrew his name from the congressional race, after winning the primary. This put Republicans in a difficult position because a candidate’s name cannot be on the ballot unless he/she participates in the primary. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs was appointed to serve the remainder of the term and she ran as a write-in. Even as a write-in, she received over 40% of the vote, a testament to how conservative this district really is.

Generally, this district tends to be a 60-40 Conservative split, part of the reason Republicans are hopeful to retake this seat. The other reason Republicans are so excited is that Pete Olson is a great candidate. Pete was born and raised in the Clear Lake area and got a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Rice University (just down the road). Following graduation, he attended University of Texas Law School, however decided to not practice law after receiving his JD. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Naval Aviator in the Persian Gulf War. After the war, Pete served as naval liaison to the United States Senate, the same position John McCain served in prior to becoming a member of the United States House of Representatives. Most recently, Pete served as Texas Senator John Cornyn's chief of staff.

Last night we got to see Pete speak about his plans to make the US energy independent, keep taxes low, and keep American’s safe. We are excited to be working for him today.
