Last night, Kerry and I accidentally found ourselves in a conversation with a Democrat who insisted on questioning whether or not we knew enough to back up our beliefs. His exact words after asking us how old we were: "You can't know you're Republicans, there's so much to life you don't know about, you haven't even seen the whole country." . . .
You've been following along on our coast-to-coast road trip from the beginning. Now we invite you to take a more intimate look.
Yesterday, we had quite the scenic drive (11 hours total, 9 of which were in the same Texas congressional district) but we finally made it to Las Cruces, New Mexico. Today we are in the Doña Ana County GOP office making phone calls for John McCain and the local candidates running for Senate and Congress: Steve Pearce and Ed Tinsley. I'll admit that calling people with these surveys gets a little monotonous and frustrating, especially when you call someone who feels the need to share a few choice words with you, but I think all of us are feeling more positively about it today.
One of my favorite feelings in the world is the one you get when someone unnecessarily and unexpectedly goes out of their way to do something nice for you. We all had that feeling tonight when, by complete coincidence, we got the chance to meet one of our donors.
We had lunch with Anne Northup today as we wrapped up our work in Louisville (a.k.a loo-vull). It was great to spend some time getting to know the woman we were working for in a city we've really enjoyed. She pressed us to find out what we thought were some of the best ideas other campaigns have had so she could learn from them. We've been making mental notes of these things along the way so we were able to answer that question pretty easily.
For as long as I can remember caring about politics, national security has been one of the issues that matters most to me. I’ve always wanted to be more knowledgeable about foreign affairs and especially about what’s going on in Iraq. I wish someone would have told me earlier that all I needed to do to become an expert was to take a trip abroad, have a bunch of reporters follow me around, and schedule a few good photo ops.
After making over 2,600 phone calls for State Senator Kirk Schuring, we have finally called it a day.
Yesterday, we had the pleasure of meeting our first Congresswoman at the Adams County Fair in West Union, OH. Jean Schmidt represents OH-2 which includes several counties along the southern border of the state. On account of meeting our first female elected official, I started to think about what it means to be a woman in politics.
Right now, we're headed to Springfield, OH to help State Senator Steve Austria’s congressional campaign. We plan on spending a little time in the office before working at another county festival. State Senator Austria hopes to replace the reitring Congressman David Hobson and we're looking forward to helping him do just that.
We spent this morning and the early afternoon knocking on doors in Columbus for Steve Stivers. We had a good time, got a lot done, and got a little exercise while we were at it.
